Understanding Samoan articles, plural markers, and noun formation.

Samoan Nouns and Articles

Samoan nouns work differently from English, with articles playing a crucial role in sentence structure.

Article System

Samoan has several articles that precede nouns:

  • le – definite singular article (the)
  • se – indefinite singular article (a/an)
  • ni – indefinite plural article (some)
  • o – presentative article (used for subjects and in “o” sentences)

Examples

  • le fale – the house
  • se teine – a girl
  • ni tamaiti – some children
  • o le faiaoga – (it is) the teacher
