Samoan nouns work differently from English, with articles playing a crucial role in sentence structure.
Article System
Samoan has several articles that precede nouns:
- le – definite singular article (the)
- se – indefinite singular article (a/an)
- ni – indefinite plural article (some)
- o – presentative article (used for subjects and in “o” sentences)
Examples
- le fale – the house
- se teine – a girl
- ni tamaiti – some children
- o le faiaoga – (it is) the teacher
